Monomotapa... (0) 1 Motor Action... (0) 0
EVEN in Cup matches, Monomotapa are unstoppable.
After fielding an almost new team against Motor Action at Rufaro Stadium yesterday, Monomotapa still came out tops to book a place in the CBZ FA Cup second round. Midfielder Tendai Samanja’s solitary strike in the 79th minute settled matters at Rufaro. The resilience within the Monomotapa camp was top drawer. Kennedy Machaka was thrust between the posts ahead of Godfrey Mangove and the young goalkeeper did not disappoint — he oozed the confidence of a veteran throughout the match. Monomotapa’s coach Norman Mapeza tried new players to build depth as the log leaders aim for the jugular: the Premiership. Inspirational skipper Mthulisi Maphosa and Daniel Zokoto were rested for yesterday’s tie. Charles Chiutsa started on the bench, which was dominated by new faces: Russel Madamombe, Ashley Mukwenya, Learnmore Simango and Tawanda Mupunga. Yesterday’s match was watched by a paltry crowd that will make new sponsors think twice before pouring money into soccer. Monomotapa dominated the first half with some good build-ups but could not find the target. After the breather, Monomotapa upped the tempo and laid siege on the Bulls’ half in search of a breakthrough. And on one such occasion in the 74th minute, Moses Williams scooped the ball out as Asani Nhongo aimed for a simple tap in. But there was no Williams to stop Samanja’s effort in the 79th minute. Left back Ocean Mushure found Samanja inside the box and S FC thumped Black Rhinos 4-0 at Gwanzura Stadium Other CBZ FA Cup fixtures: Masvingo United v AirZim Jets (Mucheke); Shabanie Mine v Mkwasine (Maglas); Highlanders v Kiglon (Barbourfields); Buffalo H/ware v Railstars (Sakubva 1100hours); Eastern Lions v Mwana Africa (Sakubva 1500 hours); Wednesday: CAPS United v Kujatana (Gwanzura); Thursday: Lancashire v Lengthens (Rufaro).
