Botswana Slams 'media lies' PDF Print E-mail

BOTSWANA last week reacted angrily to state media reports describing them as "malicious".

On Tuesday, the state media alleged that Botswana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation had told the Sadc summit that Morgan Tsvangirai had lied to the grouping about the situation in Zimbabwe.

But at the weekend a statement from Phandu Skelemani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said what was being paraded as his words "are nothing but a figment of his/her own imagination".

"To start with, Honourable Skelemani never held an interview with anybody. . . Equally important, the proceedings of the Organ (on Defence and Security) were all held in a closed meeting. Thus, the Minister had no opportunity to share his views or those of the Botswana government with any member of the press. . .

"It is therefore, our view that this news article is not only malicious but it is clearly a desperate and deliberate attempt to misinform the public and cast aspersion on the principled position Botswana took with respect to the political situation in Zimbabwe," he said. "Botswana stands firm on its principled position of ensuring that the Zimbabwean situation is resolved by an all inclusive solution that enjoys the unqualified support of all Zimbabweans."
